Jay’s Story

“The reason this transaction was different is because of the amount of work and efforts that were required to complete the task at hand given the tight deadlines. My work was cut out for me on the sale of their property and dealing with the personal things that Sugi and his family were going through.

My client lived with his parents and his elder brother who recently got married and moved out partially with his wife. All within the same year and time frame, Sugi had just recently lost his late girlfriend tragically and at the same time, his mother just suffered a life-threatening experience due to her diabetic condition and had to get an amputation. His mother luckily survived and is in good spirits in their new condo.

Moreover, I was able to renovate their entire home for $20,000 and threw out 5 dumpster bins loaded of household waste and old material. I was able to transform their entire home and sell it for a record price, way above the neighbourhood value during this time. With limited funds available, I was able to use my skills as a General Contractor and help them save money on expensive labour and kept the renovation cost to the minimum.

It took me over 3 months to complete my task of managing the renovation of their home, finding them a new condominium to downsize and retire, get them into their new condo and finish the renovations on time and get it sold. I was a one-man army, I hired family members, subcontracted different tradesmen and companies, got the property transformed, staged, and got it sold over asking.

I experienced life-changing moments during this time and I cherished it because it was a special deal for me to see them be financially free, have another shot at life, be debt-free, retire happily, and healthy. I was a part of their positive transformation during a time of loss and they definitely appreciated what I was able to do for them during a time of need.”

The Takeaway

Real estate agent stories can offer valuable lessons for agents. While Jay needed the traits of empathy and persistence to sell a home for a family under severe personal stress, it was his knowledge and range of experience that really saved the day. His skills as a General Contractor were essential to being able to provide economical and fast renovation. One can have a desire to go above and beyond but it takes an exceptional skill set to renovate, stage, and sell a home over the asking price and under a tight deadline.
