Columbus Day, also called Indigenous Peoples’ Day commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492, in the New World. This Date commemorates the meeting of the Old World- Europe, Africa, and Asia and the New World- North America and South America. The first Columbus Day celebration took place in 1792, when NY’s Columbian Order held an event to commemorate the historic landing’s 300th anniversary. Local groups host parades and street fairs featuring colorful costumes, music and food. In places that use the day to honor indigenous peoples, activities include traditional dance events and lessons about Native American culture.
