Canada's 5-yr government bond yield reached ~3.7% recently, after renewed selling spread through global bond markets and pushed the benchmark closer to its recent high.
Because this benchmark helps shape fixed mortgage pricing in Canada, the rebound signaled added pressure for borrowers after a prior close near ~3.6%.
Rising oil prices helped drive the move, as crude returned above $100 a barrel and revived concerns about inflation and further central bank increases.
A major Canadian bank then raised advertised fixed mortgage rates by 10 to 20 bps across 1- through 5-yr terms and trimmed variable discounts.
That step followed similar fixed-rate increases at other major banks and additional lenders, keeping Canada's mortgage pricing tied closely to bond-market swings.

Canada Yield Rebounds as Oil Revives Inflation

Canada’s federal senior benefit can be reduced by recovery tax when income crosses the annual threshold. In Early-Q4 2026, max monthly pay is $762.50.
RRSP withdrawals count as taxable income alongside pensions and public benefits, while TFSA withdrawals do not, making account placement important for retirement income planning.
By Dec. 31 of the year you turn 71, an RRSP must become an RRIF or annuity, and minimum withdrawals keep rising with age.
Example: a 72-yr retiree with $55K pension, $12K public pension, $9K benefit, and a $700K RRIF could face a $37.8K withdrawal and >$3K clawback.
Options included splitting pension and RRIF income with a spouse, drawing RRSP funds earlier, or delaying the benefit to 70 for 36% larger payments.
