Start by ranking urgent needs like mortgage, family expenses, debt, and emergency savings, then compare them with retirement contributions and insurance goals.
Coverage works best when it reflects debts, education costs, household bills, and spouse needs, with payout amounts reviewed as loans shrink and children gain independence.
Insurance premiums should fit the budget, while retirement saving stays on track, especially where minimum deposits unlock tax benefits or employer matching.
Investment choices should follow clear timelines, risk tolerance, and available cash, after checking emergency savings, home costs, and debts that may need attention first.
Annual plan reviews can keep insurance, retirement, and investing aligned through marriage, parenthood, housing changes, income shifts, and approaching retirement milestones over time.
Professional guidance can help compare options and adjust the plan over time, while families still need recommendations that match their own goals

Canada's program offers maternity and parental support, with payments at ~55% of earnings up to ~$0.7K weekly for eligible applicants across Canada.
Quebec residents follow a separate provincial system for maternity, paternity, parental, and adoption benefits, rather than the federal benefit program in Canada.
The person receiving maternity benefits may also qualify for parental benefits, but maternity weeks remain only for the parent away because of pregnancy or birth.
Parents of a newborn or newly adopted child choose standard or extended parental benefits; when sharing, both parents must pick one option and apply separately.
Standard parental benefits must be used within 52 weeks, extended within 78 weeks, and once payments start, that choice cannot be changed.
