Prescription drug plans can help manage costs for brand-name drugs, specialty medications, and ongoing therapies, making careful comparison of premiums, deductibles, and coverage especially important.
Among seven national insurers reviewed, one stood out with a $0 avg. monthly premium, the lowest deductible, and the highest federal quality score.
Other top picks stood out for claims handling, prior authorizations, customer service, low premiums, preferred-pharmacy savings, and broad availability, though deductibles or ratings varied.
For 2027, stand-alone prescription drug plan premiums are expected to avg. ~$36 monthly, while annual deductibles can vary but cannot exceed $700.
Shoppers can compare local options by ZIP code, medications, formularies, restrictions, and pharmacy networks, then enroll during eligible enrollment windows or qualifying special periods.

US Part D Options for 2027

This employer-funded benefit is not insurance itself; it reimburses eligible individual-plan costs, generally tax-free, after workers enroll in their own coverage first.
Employers set the monthly contribution, gaining spending control, but should also weigh local plan options and administrative demands before replacing group coverage.
Employees choose among local individual plans, while employers can offer different contribution amounts to qualifying groups, such as full-time, part-time, or location-based workers.
Employees should review monthly allowances, reimbursable expenses, family eligibility, proof requirements, rollover rules, and whether affordability limits access to public marketplace tax credits.
A new offer can open special enrollment outside regular periods, and strong planning, communication, and support help employees start coverage confidently when the benefit begins.
