Liability is one coverage type. Full coverage describes a policy bundling liability with other required protections plus collision and comprehensive, depending on state rules and insurer.
Liability helps pay others' injury, property damage, and possible legal costs when you cause a crash, but it does not cover your car or injuries.
Full coverage usually includes liability, state-required protections, collision for crash damage, and comprehensive for theft, vandalism, falling objects, and natural disasters, though details vary.
Some states also require UM/UIM, PIP, or MedPay. Collision and comprehensive are not state-required, but lenders or lessors often require them on financed vehicles.
Even full coverage has gaps: wear and tear, maintenance, intentional damage, and add-ons like roadside help or rental reimbursement usually require separate coverage.
Choosing coverage depends on state rules, loan or lease terms, finances, and risk tolerance. An industry expert said ~three out of

A recent US survey found ~4 in 10 homeowners had wrongly assumed policy coverage, and ~1 in 5 said that mistake later cost out-of-pocket money.
Coverage knowledge stayed weak: ~4 in 10 could not explain weather damage protection, and >1 in 2 did not know their deductible.
Weather damage already hit budgets. In the past 3 yr, ~1 in 2 paid out of pocket; some owed $2K+, and some still carried debt.
Most homeowners monitored weather alerts, yet many still felt unprepared. Only ~1 in 5 reviewed coverage in the past year, and few turned to agents.
Experts said homeowners who fared best did small steps ahead of time, including annual coverage reviews, because many skipped upgrades over cost or uncertainty.
