An industry body is considering a ~10% co-payment for retail health policies from January 1, 2027, with insurers covering the remaining approved treatment cost.
The proposed share would be capped at Rs 500K per claim and would apply only to the insurer-approved amount, not the full hospital bill.
On an approved Rs 500K claim, the customer would pay Rs 50K and the insurer Rs 450K; if Rs 400K is covered, noncovered costs remain.
The proposal would cover both cashless and reimbursement claims, but it remains unclear whether customers could pay higher premiums for plans without the co-payment.
Experts said lower premiums may come with higher treatment spending, and a ~10% co-payment may reduce premiums by only mid-single-digit percentages for customers.

Health Insurance May Add a 10% Co-Payment

US home insurance bills have climbed as insurers prepared for costlier future claims, driven by severe weather, inflation, and updated risk models.
Even after a claim-free year, a higher renewal can reflect market pressure, a bigger dwelling limit, lost discounts, or property changes worth checking.
A recent federal report found homes in severe or extreme wind-risk areas carried premiums ~60% higher than similar homes in the next-lower category.
Rebuilding costs also mattered: repair and reconstruction expenses climbed ~30% over five years, lifting claim payouts and raising the coverage needed to rebuild.
Before the next renewal, homeowners should compare declarations pages, confirm limits match rebuilding costs, review deductibles and endorsements, and check whether escrow payments could rise.
