>70% of Canadian readers compared finances at least sometimes, with ~20% doing it constantly and ~53% doing it occasionally, showing strong interest.
Investment performance mattered more than total savings, salary, home buying and payoff milestones, holiday quality, and most other financial benchmarks readers considered.
Still, ~78% felt happy or inspired when comparing themselves with others, suggesting comparison can motivate when it is handled thoughtfully for growth.
An expert warned that broad targets like $1.7M for retirement can spark hopelessness, because needs differ widely with housing, pensions, and spending.
A healthier benchmark: compare yourself with your own progress over 6 or 12 mo, then turn envy into goals tied to freedom, security, or family.

Your Financial Progress Beats the Ranking

At a ~7% avg. yield, ~87K inside a TFSA could generate ~500 monthly, or ~6K yearly, in tax-free income through monthly distributions.
For a Canadian resident eligible since 2009 who never contributed, TFSA room could reach $109K in 2026, making that income target potentially achievable.
One retail REIT offered grocery-anchored rent, ~98% occupancy, and same-property income growth near ~3%, or ~4% excluding anchor tenants, supporting monthly income stability.
One auto-property REIT with Canadian properties stayed fully leased, lifted distributions ~2%, expected no material lease expiries until 2028, and carried mostly fixed-rate debt.
Both REITs highlighted income potential, but payouts, debt, and unit prices can change, so broader TFSA diversification helps manage risk during economic downturns.
